7 (FREE) Things to do in Los Angeles

Are you truly American if you haven't spent some time in the City of Angels? I get it, we aren't all made of money, but it turns out there are still a ton of fun activities that will cost you next to nothing (parking and snacks excluded). Whether you are an LA native or just escaping for the weekend, this list will surely send you on an adventure you will never forget. After reading through these activities, some more well-known than others, you will be dying to take a trip to the second-largest city in the United States. Get ready to immerse yourself in the magic of LA with our curated list of the top 7 free things to do while you're in Los Angeles.

1. Explore the Venice Canals

This is possibly one of my favorite places near LA, and very few people know about it! This place is meant to mimic the canals of Venice, Italy, and has a series of waterways connecting a few neighborhoods together.

Not only is it serene to walk along the paths and bridges between the waterways, but the houses are incredible to look at too! With some of the most interesting architectural structures in LA, and vibrantly colored houses of all shapes and sizes, you will find yourself taking more pictures than expected and probably will walk away with a new idea of what your ultimate dream home looks like.

This location is just blocks away from the well-known Venice Beach, so it's a great place to stop by on your way to relax on the sand! Take a leisurely stroll to navigate the canals at your own pace. Don't forget to capture some Instagram-worthy moments in this hidden gem of LA!

2. Visit the Getty Museum

Chances are you have done a Google search for an image of a famous celebrity or just a landscape and seen the watermark of "Getty Images." Well, I bet you didn't know that these images hail from two whole museums, The Getty and the Getty Villa nestled on top of the Santa Monica Mountains. These museums house some of the most iconic art pieces, including one of my favorites, Vincent Van Gogh's "Irises." Even if you don't consider yourself a sophisticated connoisseur of the arts, this is a great option to spend some time whether you are traveling alone, as a couple, or with a family.

If you are trying to decide between the two museum experiences, consider that the Getty features a wide array of art as well as classic names like Rembrandt and Van Gogh that you may recognize. The Getty Villa museum contains Greek and Roman artifacts ranging from 6,500 BC to 400 AD, including pieces such as the Lansdowne Heracles and the Victorious Youth. The Getty Villa also boasts incredible architecture and gardens, mimicking the Greek and Roman styles, which is presumably where the name of The Getty "Villa" sprang from.

Since entry to the museum is free, you can spend hours of your day perusing the art or just pop in to check things out. However, you will have to plan ahead to get timed tickets, as the slots can fill up quickly. Beyond that, your only cost is parking, which can still be pricey, but is well worth the experience.

3. Soak Up the Sun at the Beach

No trip to LA is complete without a visit to one of its iconic beaches. Whether you choose to relax on the sandy shores of Santa Monica, Venice Beach, or catch some waves at Malibu's famous surf spots, the LA coastline promises endless adventures.

For those of you who may be more familiar with the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean is its cold-blooded sister. Even in the height of summer, the water can be a bit chilly. So don't expect to see too many people swimming if you visit anytime other than the warmest months. Besides jumping in the ocean or sunbathing, most beaches have biking/running paths and volleyball nets set up for a pickup game on the beach. Bask in the warm California sun, take a dip in the Pacific Ocean, and experience the laid-back beach vibes that define the city's lifestyle.

4. Explore Griffith Observatory and Park

View of the Griffeth Observatory's dome from the hiking trail

Live out your fantasies at this real-life location where scenes for Rebel Without a Cause and La La Land were filmed. This observatory sits perched on Mount Hollywood and offers incredible views of the city. And the best part is... IT'S ALSO FREE.

There is an option to hike to the top, which I suggest if you are able. There are switchbacks, and it is a moderately difficult hike because the journey is mostly uphill. But as you reach the top, you are greeted by the most incredible view looking out over Los Angeles, and you will even be able to see the iconic Hollywood sign. If hiking doesn't fit your style, there is a road that leads right up to the top with parking available.

Inside, there are exhibits on space exploration, planetarium shows, and stargazing through powerful telescopes. If I could do it again, I would try to go around golden hour for the chance to witness an incredible sunset over LA from this unique vantage point.

Once you are done in the observatory, check out the rest of the park that surrounds the observatory. Take a stroll, walk your dog, have a picnic, I don't know... but fresh air is good for you.

5. Embark on a magical adventure in Downtown Disney

Indulge your inner child and step into the enchanting world of the happiest place on earth (without paying for it). Downtown Disney is nestled right on the edge of Disneyland parks, but unlike the parks, you do not need a ticket to get in.

While there are no rides here, they often have events such as concerts and shows going on in the outdoor venues, as well as fun places to shop for Disney (and normal) apparel and plenty of fun stuff to see. Depending on the day/time, you can meet beloved Disney characters and immerse yourself in the magic of fantasy lands without the price tag.

Some of the most popular spots include the Lego Store and Rainforest Cafe, but there are too many restaurants and stores so I won't try to name them all. While this isn't a replacement for the Disney Parks, this is a fun spot to hang out, get some food, and experience the magic of Disney.

6. Indulge in Sidecar Doughnuts

A variety box of 10 Sidecar Doughnuts

Okay... before everyone comes at me for including an eatery where you do indeed have to purchase the desserts, look at them. Look at them again and tell me you would rather have these delicious doughnuts excluded because they come at a cost. Yeah, that is what I thought. Jokes aside, these are some of the tastiest/gourmet doughnuts I have ever tasted, and I make a stop every time I pass through LA.

Savor handcrafted doughnuts in unique flavors like Huckleberry, Butter & Salt, and Saigon Cinnamon Crumb. They also have rotating flavors, and I have had the pleasure of tasting unique flavors like passion fruit and eggs Benedict, which actually had a poached egg on it. SO YUMMY. Besides doughnuts, they offer freshly brewed coffee, and it is well worth a visit. Be sure to arrive early to sample the daily rotating menu of doughnut creations before they run out!

7. Visit Olvera Street

Olvera Street, nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, stands as a vibrant testament to the city's diverse cultural heritage. The lively Mexican marketplace is bursting with colors, enticing scents, and lively sounds.

The street vendors offer a treasure trove of Mexican handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs. It is a blast to grab some street tacos and take a stroll perusing the tiny little shops, packed with handcrafted goods. You will feel like you have teleported across the border.

One of the standout attractions on Olvera Street is the Avila Adobe, a historic gem that dates back to 1818. This adobe structure, the oldest residence in Los Angeles, provides a glimpse into the city's past and serves as a poignant reminder of its rich heritage.

For those with a penchant for negotiation, Olvera Street offers the perfect opportunity to hone your haggling skills and snag some bargains along the way. And if you find yourself craving more cultural exploration, LA's Chinatown is within walking distance, promising another adventure filled with culinary delights and cultural discoveries.

Get ready to embark on a one-of-a-kind weekend escape to Los Angeles filled with adventure, culture, and endless possibilities. From the tranquil Venice Canals to the bustle of Olvera Street, LA offers something for everyone. So pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready to make unforgettable memories in the City of Angels!

This is a list of things that I have enjoyed in Los Angeles, but every activity listed here may not be your cup of tea. I hope you use this list as a jumping-off point and make your own incredible itinerary that will lead to an epic trip full of memories!

Let the adventure begin!
